If you are interested in becoming a Writing Center tutor, please submit the following items:
- Two letters of recommendation from professors who can comment both on your writing and your interpersonal interactions.
- Two or three writing samples, totaling at least 10 pages. (One 10 page paper is also fine.)
- A current resume.
- An unofficial transcript. (You must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA in order to become a tutor.)
- A brief (300-400 words) personal statement explaining why you want to tutor and what qualities you would bring to the position.
You may email all items to the Writing Center Director, Ms. Elaine MacDougall, at email@example.com. Alternately, you may place materials in Ms. MacDougall’s mailbox on the 4th floor of the Performing Arts and Humanities Building.
Please note that if you are invited to become a tutor, you will be required to take a 4-credit course, English 321, before you can formally be hired. In addition to attending regular class meetings, you will be required to complete a 25-hour internship in the Writing Center. (Interning hours are flexible.) Successful completion of the course certifies you as a Level 1 tutor with the College Reading and Learning Association and qualifies you to apply for a job at UMBC’s Writing Center.
