Placement Goals for Aleks Math Placement Test

There are a few tracks for students at UMBC, these are determined by what math courses are needed for your major.  Please find your track and choose your Placement Goal from your track.

Students who are planning on majoring in disciplines that do not require any calculus or algebra-intensive courses, such as Africana Studies, Ancient Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Dance, etc, usually follow the below track.

Placement Score Course
49% and below Math 104 – Quantitative Literacy
a pre-requisite for the below courses, does not count toward graduation
50% and above Math 120 – Concepts of Mathematics (recommended for Art Majors) or
Stat 121 – Introduction to Statistics (recommended for Social Science Majors)

Students who are planning on teaching Elementary Education, should use the following track.

Placement Score Course
0 – 29% LRC 099 – Introductory Algebra
a non-credit course to build the student up to College Level Math
30% to 49% Math 106 – Intermediate and College Algebra
pre-requisite for Math 131/132, does not count toward graduation
50% or above Math 131/132 – Math for Elementary School Teachers

Students who are planning on majoring in science disciplines that use Calculus, but do not require Trigonometry, such as Financial Economics, some BA’s in Biology, IS, etc may choose the following track.

0 – 29% LRC 099 – Introductory Algebra
a non-credit course to build the student up to College Level Math
30% to 60% Math 106 – Intermediate and College Algebra
pre-requisite for Math 155, does not count toward graduation
61% or above Math 155 – Applied Calculus

Students that are planning in majoring in science disciplines that use Calculus with Trigonometry, such as Math, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, etc, may choose the following track

0 – 29% LRC 099 – Introductory Algebra
a non-credit course to build the student up to College Level Math
30% to 60% Math 106 – Intermediate and College Algebra
pre-requisite for Math 155, does not count toward graduation
61% to 75% Math 150 – Precalculus
76% and above Math 151 – Calculus and Analytic Geometry 1
